Media and Communications Manager

Video transcript

What do you do?

I work as a Media Communications Manager at the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry as part of the Corporate Affairs and Devolved Nations team.

What does your typical day involve?

So day to day, I'm working basically keeping up with the external environment. So what's going on in the news, what's going on in our industry or what's going on with government.

A large part of my role is the digital side of things. So what's going on social media, making sure I'm pushing out key messages from the ABPI, from our members, onto our social media channels. I work with journalists, so helping them with any inquiries they might have about life sciences in the UK, and what's going on in the pharmaceutical industry.

What qualifications and experiences do you have?

So I've got a Pharmacology degree, which I obtained from the University of Manchester. After my degree, I worked at a healthcare communications agency where I was working on behalf of pharmaceutical clients, and we helped them push out their healthcare communications. I've also worked in the government for a few years, working in different various different health departments within the government. And then I ended up here!

What piece of advice would you give to someone seeking a career in the pharmaceutical industry?

The main bit of advice I would give is, when you think of pharmaceutical industry, it's not just lab work, you know, you're not always just in a lab coat and, you know, stuck somewhere indoors for a few hours a day. There is so much more to the pharmaceutical industry, there are so many roles that you can get into which you might not even guess could be part of a role within pharma. So, you know, you could be a media communications manager like myself, or you could work in medical writing. You could work in the legal department of pharmaceutical company, you could work in finance. There's a lot of environmental work as well that goes on within the pharmaceutical industry. So it's really broad and it's really great industry to work in.
